Greetings Oakers,
I wanted to reach out to you today with an email from our Student Resource Officer, Officer McGarvey. Officer McGarvey will be talking to students next week about distracted driving. If you drive through our parking lot you will see a display of a vehicle that was in an actual accident. We wanted you to be aware of the educational purpose. Please read Officer McGarvey's message below. Please reach out to either of us if you have any concerns.

Parents,
I wanted to share with you all, that I will be spending the week of Prom discussing and teaching students about the dangers of distracted driving and aggressive driving. The Oregon Department of Transportation has given us access to (2) visual displays that represent these dangers, and I wanted each student to have the opportunity to view them. These are real life crashes that have occurred in Oregon, showing the actual vehicle that was involved. Attached to the displays are plaques that share the story of what happened and it gives the audience something to reflect upon. I will be speaking to students at random throughout this time, asking them what they think about the displays, asking how they can protect themselves and their friends, and then also incorporate some form of reward for taking on the task of learning about this. I wanted parents to be aware of these displays coming on campus and prepare anyone who feels this might trigger some type of trauma with their student. The students will not be forced to look at the displays and I will not force anyone to talk with me about these topics because I never know a family’s backstory. The displays will be at the far east end of campus in case a student wishes to avoid it. Feel free to contact me if there are any concerns, or if you have any questions about this.
Thank you,
Officer Jake McGarvey
